:: Power Wheel Chairs ::
Qualifications for a Powered Wheelchair

There are people with certain medical conditions that make it hard for them to move throughout their house. For these people there are specially designed electric indoor wheelchairs. These indoor wheelchairs are designed for people who have no ability to move. In order to qualify for such a wheelchair you need to have a problem with your locomotor system or you have lung or heart problems that make it impossible for you to walk. Furthermore they should not be able to use a manual wheelchair on their own. For such people an electric indoor wheelchair will increase their independence in the home.

These indoor wheelchairs are designed to be used in the house or outside in the lawn or garden, they are not made to be taken away from the home. However, there are some electric wheelchairs that have dual capabilities. They can be used indoors but are also capable of being used away from the home. In order to qualify for a dual powered wheelchair you have to meet the above criteria and also the following characteristics.

The user of the powered wheelchair must first have the residential resources for the chair. They must be able to store the wheelchair and have a power supply for charging the wheelchairs battery. The outside environment that they will be interacting with must be accessible and compatible with a dual-purpose wheelchair.

The user of the dual-purpose wheelchair must also be able to physically handle the wheelchair outside of the home. These means they must be able to meet vision requirements and motor vehicle requirements concerning epilepsy or loss of consciousness.

The user of the wheelchair must comply with manufacturer weight limitations and the powered wheelchair must not have to be modified or customized for the user to handle outdoor use.

Finally the user must benefit from the dual-purpose wheelchair. The user must show that the wheelchair will increase their independence and quality of life.
