Ultrasound
Most people only think ultrasound is used on pregnant
women to assess how their babies are developing.
Ultrasound
can be used to detect a variety of health problems,
however. It is used to view a patient’s internal
organs and to assess their blood flow through various
vessels. Many of the body's internal organs, including
the heart, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas,
kidneys and bladder can be looked at using ultrasound
technology.
It can help determine the source of pain, swelling
or infection.
Because ultrasound images are captured in real time,
they demonstrate movement of internal tissues and
organs, and allow physicians to observe the patient’s
blood flow and heart valve functions. Ultrasound
can be used to diagnose damage after a heart attack
or other illness; find gallstones or kidney stones;
or identify fluid, cysts, tumors or abscess in the
abdomen or liver.
Ultrasound is a good method
for guiding minimally invasive procedures. Most
examinations
take 45 minutes or less. Additionally, ultrasound
is a valuable means of examining the body to detect
problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints
and soft tissue. Ultrasound allows radiologists
to analyze a multiplicity of conditions and assess
damage after an injury or illness.
