What Is High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a l growing concern among health care professionals in the United States .According to recent studies, more than 60 million Americans have high blood pressure. This means that about 1 in 4 adults aged 18 years and older have high blood pressure. Studies have also indicated that uncontrolled high blood pressure increases the risk of disability from heart attack, stroke and kidney failure.

Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury and is the force in the arteries when the heart beats (systolic pressure) as well as when the heart is at rest (diastolic pressure).

The American association defines normal blood pressure as 120/ 80. Any rise in systolic and diastolic pressure over 120 or 80 is defined as hypertension or high blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries as the heart contracts and pumps blood into the arteries. Diastolic pressure is the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes after the contraction. The diastolic pressure reflects the minimum pressure to which the arteries are exposed. Earlier, physicians used to say that an increase in systolic pressure was worse than an increase in diastolic pressure. But these days that have revised the standards and place equal importance on systolic and diastolic pressure.

High blood pressure can occur in children or adults, but it's more common among people over age 35. Although high blood pressure can be caused by stress and tension it can also be hereditary condition. Some people have a history of high blood pressure and individuals in these families need to take extra care to maintain their blood pressure within the normal range. People with diabetes mellitus, gout or kidney disease and obesity are likely to have high blood pressure.

Any elevation in the systolic or diastolic pressure can increase an individual’s risk of developing heart attacks or strokes, eye damage or stoke. For individuals at high risk to developing high blood pressure physicians these days are suggesting constant monitoring of the blood pressure through digital blood pressure monitors. These blood pressure monitors are easy to use and do not require any specialized skill.

Physicians are also recommending individuals with high blood pressure to make some lifestyle changes including cessation of smoking, limiting sodium, alcohol and caffeine consumption, regular exercise and a healthy diet.

As high blood pressure is becoming a major problem in the United States , one out of four Americans have high blood pressure, digital blood pressure monitors are becoming exceedingly important. Digital blood pressure monitors help check and record blood pressure easily.
